Would you like to know what Sicily tastes like at Easter?
As part of our efforts to promote Italian gastronomic culture, we have decided to dedicate our April themed dinner to Sicilian cuisine associated with the Easter holidays.
Italy is a strongly Catholic country, and Sicily is perhaps the greatest devotee of religious traditions and holidays. Easter brings the entire island to a standstill for several days. Processions are held to commemorate the suffering of Christ. The celebrations are rich in costumes and decorations. Some celebrations last for 24 hours straight, such as the most famous one in Trapani, which has been held every year since the 17th century. During the I Misteri di Trapani festival, life-size wooden statues are carried on stretchers, accompanied by a parade and music. The city is decorated with flowers and candles at night. Many participants walk barefoot as a sign of penance.
Of course, Easter celebrations would not be complete without quality local food. Over the centuries, a menu has been created that is typical for these holidays and for the season in which they take place. In addition to lamb, which symbolizes the innocence of the sacrifice (i.e., Christ), everything revolves around spring vegetables and fresh cheeses.
This time, we decided to skip meat and prepare a light spring vegetable Easter dinner in the spirit of Sicilian traditions. Our chef Tamara Zanellato teamed up with several Sicilian colleagues and prepared a delicious, fresh, very green spring menu. We paired each course with Sicilian wines, mainly from the Nino Barraco winery, located between Trapani and Marsala.
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Smíchov, and we promise that you won't have to participate in any processions or go barefoot during dinner.
