Barraco
The small Barraco winery was founded in 2004 when Nino Barraco followed his ancestors and started growing vines in the Marsala area on the west coast of Sicily. Gradually he bought more plots and today he looks after 14 hectares planted only with the native Sicilian varieties Grillo, Catarratto, Zibibbo, Nero d'Avola and Pignatello. His vineyards are very varied, some are clay with three-million-year-old stones that the locals call 'cuti', others even grow right among the sand dunes. But they have one thing in common: Nino works them in a purely natural way, without irrigation, chemical sprays and artificial fertilizers, almost without intervention. He only accompanies his wines on the journey from vineyard to cellar, he doesn't purify, doesn't filter and lets nature show what it can do. His philosophy is simple: the wine doesn't have to be perfect, but it must be distinctive and recognisable, reflecting as much as possible where it comes from. And that is exactly what Barraco wines are. Sicilian wild, unrefined, full of very unusual notes, with a distinct salinity. Not the usual harmonious wines, but real artisanal wildness.
