5 November from 5 pm: An exceptional evening in Smíchov, during which we’ll be tasting six Barolos spanning a period of up to 16 years!
Some wines are best enjoyed straight away. Others come into their own precisely because we allow them time to develop. And Barolo undoubtedly belongs to the latter category.
For November, we have organised an exceptional evening dedicated to Barolo from the Marziano Abbona winery, during which we will explore together what time (and other factors) can do to this great Piedmontese wine.
Simone De Caro will be joining us straight from the winery, and he’ll be bringing with him several bottles from Abbona’s private archive. This means we’ll be tasting wines separated by as many as 16 years!
During the evening, we’ll be comparing three different Barolos:
Barolo Pressenda 2004 & 2020
Barolo Ravera 2009 & 2020
Barolo Cerviano-Merli 2016 & 2017
The Marziano Abbona family has its roots in Dogliani, where they have been making wine for several generations and where their story began, primarily with Dolcetto. However, it was Marziano and his brother Enrico who took a rather bold step in the 1980s: at a time when Barolo was still far from enjoying its current reputation, they began buying plots in the most interesting locations in Monforte d’Alba and Novella. They believed that it was precisely here that the potential for great wines lay.
Today, we too are reaping the benefits of those decisions. Pressenda, Ravera and Cerviano-Merli – the three vineyards from which the Barolos we shall be tasting this evening originate – represent three historically significant and entirely distinct sites and terroirs within the Barolo appellation.
It is somewhat fitting that we shall be comparing these three Barolos in particular. This is not merely a comparison between a young and an old vintage. Thanks to the different sites, we can observe how time, vintage and specific location come together in the bottle – and how the winemaker’s signature is reflected in wines that are produced just a few kilometres apart.
The entire evening will be complemented by a simple Piedmontese menu, designed to ensure the wines remain the stars of the show whilst also transporting us, for a moment, to the region from which they originate:
Tagliere di salumi piemontesi
A platter of Piedmontese cured meats
Tagliere di formaggi piemontesi
A platter of Piedmontese cheeses from mountain farms
Vitello tonnato
Slices of veal with tuna sauce and capers
Risotto con salsiccia e tartufo
Risotto with sausage and truffle
